There used to be a cafe on the plateau in Montreal that had mismatched chrome framed padded chairs, ugly old couches and a tiny washroom under a staircase that was entirely makeshift. I was bananas about this cafe, and our time there journaling at separate tables and eating these perfect ground almond cookies pulled from a jar, dusted in icing sugar.
The cafe couldn’t cope with the spike in rent and broke my heart by closing.
This is my ode to gritty spaces.
